Premier Kathleen Wynne says the Ontario government wants to immediately rectify the problem of watered-down chemotherapy drugs, but it won't tell hospitals to go back to mixing their own medications.
Wynne says the province and Health Canada are working to close "a gap in oversight" of a private company that mixed chemo drugs for four hospitals in Ontario and one in New Brunswick.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says the province and Health Canada are working to close "a gap in oversight" for a private company that mixed chemo drugs for hospitals. (Kenneth Armstrong/Canadian Press)The problem with the watered-down drugs, which affected more than 1,100 cancer patients for as long as a year, was only at hospitals that stopped mixing their own chemo medications to save money.
However, Wynne says she's not prepared to make a cause-and-effect link to the fact that the problem surfaced only where the mixing had been contracted out.
She also says this is not the time for finger pointing, and wants to wait for answers from experts before deciding what course of action the government should take.
The bags containing the chemotherapy drugs were filled with too much saline, watering down the medication by as much as 20 per cent.
