Paid blood plasma clinic proposal raises concerns

Concerns surrounding blood clinics that pay people for their plasma are being aired.

Canadians will be able to comment on the summary report of the round table discussion on the issue when it is posted on the Health Canada web site in the coming weeks, Health Canada said today.

Patient advocates, academics, the blood products industry, provincial and territorial governments, Canadian Blood Services, Héma-Québec, Health Canada and other relevant government departments met in Toronto on Wednesday to discuss the issue of paid plasma donations and the potential impact on Canada's blood system.

"This meeting gave us the opportunity to hear from stakeholders so that we can respond to and clarify some of their concerns," Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said in a statement.

"We will gather today's valuable feedback and use it to determine our next steps. As the many of the concerns relate directly to compensation of plasma donors and this is an area of provincial and territorial jurisdiction I will be communicating with my colleagues to share the concerns of stakeholders."

CBC News revealed in March that Canadian Plasma Resources is setting up paid-donor blood plasma clinics in Toronto and Hamilton.

Since then some doctors, Canadians who became infected with HIV and hepatitis C from tainted blood and plasma imported from the U.S starting in the 1980s, a union representing blood employees of Canadian Blood Services and provincial health ministers have all expressed concerns about how patients and Canada's voluntary blood products donor system could be affected.
