Lentil is a French bulldog born with a cleft lip condition who spends his days boosting the self-esteem of kids with similar ailments.

The cleft palate was a life-threatening condition for Lentil when he was born in February 2013. He weighed less than 161 grams and couldn't eat properly because of the way his his face was formed.

Lindsay Condefer fostered the puppy the next day and tube fed him every couple of hours. After 15 days, Lentil weighed in at over 374 grams.

With Lentil getting stronger, Condefer started chronicling his medical progress on a blog, My name is Lentil, leading up to the surgical procedure that would fix his palate so he would be able to eat on his own.

Doctors were initially concerned that Lentil wouldn't survive until he was old enough to have surgery because of his severe cleft palate problems.

But, Lentil and Condefer proved doctors wrong. In late May, Lentil underwent his first surgery to fix his palate.

"I've opted to not do any cosmetic procedures, as I feel it's important for all of us to remember that it's OK to be different," wrote Condefer on her blog. "It's ironic that so many people love him for the way that he looks, yet will still ridicule/judge a human for having the same difference!"

Now that he's recovered from his surgery, Lentil now spends his time visiting with kids who also have craniofacial differences.

Recently, Lentil spent the day at the 2013 Children's Craniofacial Association's family retreat, meeting lots of kids with similar experiences.
