Medical experts, health authorities and parents are concerned about actress, author and -- perhaps most problematically -- anti-vaccination advocate Jenny McCarthy readying to fill a recently vacated spot on the popular daytime talk show The View.

McCarthy will join co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd in the fall for the show's 17th season.

Former The View co-hosts Barbara Walters and the also controversial Elizabeth Hasslebeck recently announced they would not be re-joining the show in the fall.

McCarthy is a controversial choice because of her widely unpopular opinion that childhood autism development is linked to early childhood vaccinations.

Doctors diagnosed McCarthy's son, Evan, with autism in 2005.

In 2008, McCarthy appeared on CNN to share her story of how she believes she cured Evan of his autism.

She said her son, like thousands of other autism-diagnosed children, "recovered from autism."

McCarthy explained her - medically unproven - opinion that doctors administer too many vaccinations to children. She claims some of those vaccinations are unsafe and linked to autism.

People are "dying from vaccinations," she said.

The next year, McCarthy and her partner at the time, Canadian actor Jim Carrey appeared on CNN to defend McCarthy's stance.

Carrey attested to witnessing Evan overcome his autism diagnoses. Carrey echoed McCarthy's views: "I believe that autism, in my heart, is preventable and treatable."

Already in 2008, McCarthy experienced a major backlash after her interview.

That same year, two self-identified concerned citizens created a Stop Jenny McCarthy website to address and counter what they call "McCarthy's misinformation about autism."

Another online resource showing the fault behind McCarthy's opinion is the anti-vaccine body count site, which shows how many preventable illnesses and preventable deaths have allegedly happened because of the anti-vaccine movement.

The online counter also shows the number of people diagnosed with autism whose diagnosis has been scientifically linked to vaccinations. Since June 3, 2007 that number has been zero.

In addition to her public appearances discussing her views, McCarthy wrote three books on overcoming autism using so-called biomedicine, which she explains as a combination of adjusting diet, taking vitamins and supplements, and detoxing the body of certain chemicals like metals.

After The View's announcement that already prolific anti-vaccination advocate McCarthy would be given an even wider platform to preach her views by hosting the show, many seemed disappointed and outraged by ABC's decision.

Quickly, petitions urging people to pressure ABC to rescind their co-hosting offer to McCarthy sprang up.

A Change.org petition asking The View's executive producer and talent producer to take back their offer has already reached more than 10,000 signatures.

In contrast, a petition calling anti-vaccine advocates to support McCarthy's new gig has only gathered about 1/10th of that total.

TPH also posted 10 truths about vaccines online. Truth number six is contrary to McCarthy's opinion: Vaccines do not cause autism.

"There is no link between the MMR vaccine and autism," reads the TPH's explanation. "Many studies of thousands of children show that the levels of autism are similar among vaccinated and unvaccinated children. The recent increase in autism rates may be the result of better recognition and diagnosis."

TPH's campaign against McCarthy's newest gig received a mixed reaction.

Some felt it was important for health authorities to clear up public misconceptions, especially when those are spread by celebrities with a big audience. But, others felt TPH overstepped its bounds.
