A report prepared for the Ontario government has found no evidence of any malicious or deliberate attempts to dilute drugs when about 1,200 cancer patients in Ontario and New Brunswick received watered-down chemotherapy treatments.
Doctor Jake Thiessen says he has made a number of recommendations to improve patient safety and prevent such mistakes in the future.
Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews says she fully endorses Thiessen's recommendations, and will introduce legislation to authorize the College of Pharmacists to inspect and license hospital pharmacies.
The review came after it was found that Marchese Hospital Solutions provided diluted drug and saline mixtures for cancer patients — the company maintains it prepared the drugs the way it was asked to under its contract.
