Health Canada advises parents to shop smart for children's toys

Health Canada is warning consumers shopping for children's gifts to choose toys wisely to ensure that everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

Button batteries have increased in popularity in recent years, used in everything from small electronics to greeting cards. George Mack, who works for Health Canada's product safety program, says they can be dangerous to small children if swallowed.

"If a child swallows it and it, for example, comes into contact with the esophagus or the stomach or the intestinal linings, for even a short period of time, batteries can leak and cause very serious internal chemical burns," he said.

Mack says parents should be vigilant about these batteries because they are small and shiny, making them attractive to small children.

John Taits, owner of the Discovery Hut in Calgary's Chinook Centre, advises parents to shop smart.

"Things that are small parts, small battery, things like that - you want to make sure that you advise a parent that if you're looking for that for someone at a very young age, maybe re-think that," he said.

According to Mack, there is no approval process when it comes to evaluating toy safety. The onus is on the manufacturer to make sure the product is safe and label the product appropriately.

Parents also need to be aware of how their children play. Young children tend to put things in their mouths and anything with small parts can be a choking hazard.

Mack says a good way for parents to gauge at home whether a toy hasa small part is to use a toilet paper roll or a toonie. Anything smaller than that diameter would be a choking hazard for a child under the age of three.

Parents with concerns are advised to contact the toy's manufacturer or consult the Health Canada website, which has a database of recalls and safety alerts.

"The ultimate goal is to ensure that they don't injure themselves during this time when they're supposed to be having fun during this time in festive seasons," said Mack.
