Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas is standing by her decision not to sign a vaccine exemption for a constituent's teenage daughter.
Gelinas was asked to exempt a 16-year-old from receiving her measles, mumps, rubella vaccine.
To be able to go to school, students without vaccinations must fill out a form outlining their objection — and they can ask an MPP to sign that form.
Gelinas is a former nurse and current health critic for the Ontario NDP.
"I've been a politician for seven years, but for 25 years before this I was a health care professional. During those 25 years, I have seen the good that vaccinations can do," she said.
Gelinas said she contacted the integrity commissioner about her wish to refuse the constituent's request and was told it was a service MPP can choose to provide, but don't have to take part in.
Gelinas said she encouraged the family to take the form to a health care professional.
"The health care professional could go through the positive and the risk of vaccination so that they could make and informed choice, and then they could sign the form if they so wished. That was a conversation they should have with a health care professional, not a politician."
