Dr. Kent Brantly, an American doctor who survived an Ebola infection, will be speaking in Ottawa this morning about the value of a three-tiered treatment strategy to defeat the outbreak.

Brantly was diagnosed with the illness while treating patients in Liberia.

Brantly, a Texan, was given ZMapp, an experimental drug treatment used on a handful of patients and produced by U.S.-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical. He was discharged from hospital in Atlanta in August.

The United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) aimed to isolate and treat all Ebola cases and safely bury all those who died, by Jan. 1.

Meanwhile, a UN peacekeeper in Liberia has contracted Ebola and is being treated at a clinic in the capital, Monrovia. He's the third member of the mission infected by the virus.

Elsewhere on Friday, officials with a hospital in Rome said the condition of an Italian doctor who contracted Ebola while he was working in Sierra Leone has worsened. He was flown back to Italy at the end of November.

The Ebola outbreak has made nearly 17,300 people sick, with most in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Of those, about 6,100 have died, the World Health Organization says.
